Top 5 Surprises About My Tonsillectomy Recovery

  1. The pain.  I'm not going to lie.  I knew it was going to hurt, but the actual level of pain that I had was unexpected and unbelievable.  On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the worst pain you can imagine, I had expected a pretty consistent 2-3 pain level.  My pain level the first 9 days was consistently a 5-6, with spikes that regularly hit 7-8 and I had one really solid 10 pointer at one time.  I had read a lot of stories online about adult tonsillectomy pain, but I told myself two things:  1) I surely have a higher pain threshold than these randoms, and 2) only people who have extreme experiences feel compelled to get online and talk about it.  I assured myself that I was reading about worst-case scenarios and that mine would be different.  It wasn't.  The recovery was significantly worse than I expected.  I can't sugarcoat it, the pain was really bad...it was just really bad the first 9-11 days, and got worse at some points.
  2. Sleep was my worst enemy.  This is the complete opposite mentality of recovering from any other illness/procedure!  Normally sleep is your friend:  it helps time pass, it let's you get away from pain for a little bit, and helps you heal.  After a tonsillectomy, you have to chew ice or sip water constantly to keep your throat moist.  Sleep prevents you from being able to do this, and the worst pain I've felt in my life is when I slept too long -- too long meaning one continuous hour of sleep.  I had a 48-hour period where I set my alarm every 15-20 minutes because I was so terrified of the pain associated with sleeping any longer than that (finally we called the doctor and just insisted on more pain meds, which then did allow me to get more sleep).
  3. I really couldn't talk for awhile.  I thought this would last maybe a day or two, but I don't think I talked for the first 8-9 days.  Perhaps I could have pushed it and tried to talk more, but I was in so much pain that the thought of producing sound from that area of my body seemed impossible.  The safer route was to keep quiet.  This reinforces the need for a nurse; even in today's technological age of texting and e-mails, it's still amazing how much you need your voice!  I needed my mom to represent me on the phone when it came to asking questions of the doctor, sorting out refills at the pharmacy, and dealing with my short term disability company.
  4. My uvula swelled.  A lot.  It was like a big square tag hanging down the back of my throat, and was the worst on the second day.  I hadn't read that anywhere online and called my doctor (had my mom call the doctor) because it was slightly gagging me and I was concerned that it was going to keep swelling.  It turns out it is normal, and he offered me steroids to help it, but I turned down the steroids as I've experienced some bad side effects from them in the past. In retrospect I am very glad I just dealt with the uvula and turned down the steroids.
  5. It took me a long time to fully recover.  Today is day....23?  And I'm still not back at the office.  If I had a less-demanding job, or a role where I didn't need to talk as a function of my position, I think I could be back, but honestly I'm still just not up to it.  Not to mention I've really taken my time weaning slowly off the Vicodin (my doctor and the internet stories about withdrawl symptoms have scared me into taking the weaning seriously).  I'm still on an extremely low dose of it, and hope that tomorrow is my first day without meds and back to "normal."
All in all....would I still have gotten it done?  Maybe.  I had tonsillitis for 10 weeks last summer, going through 5 different antibiotics before it finally cleared.  This is after a history of tonsil issues over the last 10 years, so my doctors strongly recommended the tonsillectomy.  I mainly did it because I didn't ever want to take antibiotics again like that.  But maybe I wouldn't have ever had tonsillitis that bad again....or maybe next time I would start with the final antibiotic treatment that I tried (full dose of Augmenten for a full 15 days straight) and it would just clear in 2 weeks.  Hindsight 20/20, if I knew how bad the recovery would be I would have waited another year or two in order to see if I could figure out how to treat the tonsillitis issues.  However, it's done now and I'm sure as more time passes I will be glad that I had it done.  Time heals, right?  ;-)

    1. I am 43 years old and I had my tonsils removed 5 weeks ago today. Days 5-11 were also the worst for me. I cried most of those days. It irritates me so, that I was told to give it a couple of weeks. At this age, I think they should tell you at least a month. I am not taking pain medication, but my throat is stiff and very dry. It hurts when I yawn and my ear pain just went away last week. I still have a metallic taste in my mouth, and my taste buds haven't fully recovered. I've gone back to my ENT almost every week, and he just smiles and says I'm doing great. I hope to never run into that man again. I just look forward to feeling and speaking normal again.

    2. Thanks for the info and tips, i now don't feel like a 43 year old weakling. Ive had tonsils out, uvula reshaped, deviated septum reset and hole plugged with a button in nose all in one go. There has been no tears, but serious pain, im on day 8 and have ran out of the meds the hospital gave me which were pretty standard o.t.c uk stuff, ive got an appointment with my doctor tomorrow to pick up something stronger fingers crossed. Toothache Alongside the other more obvious pain has bothered me, plus not sure why nobody has mentioned constipation or is this just me. Wow one poo in 7 days, i was in agony last night and something had to give so my wife rushed out and got me some lactolose from the chemist today, prepare though and take sennakot from day 2-3 if having an issue. Ive taken some tips and will plod on with the tea, broken sleep, cold water, hot water bottle, clove oil, my spit jar (gross) jars of warm baby food and locking myself away from my beautiful 5 year old who is just too loud and scary for daddy right now! I read on some posts about scabs, i don't have them yet so guess have scabbing to look forward to next so now im in a race to see if i can fully recover before England get knocked out of the world cup, not fussed really as i have Belgium at 33/1 anyway, i just want to feel normal again. Ps, day 7 and lost 6lb so far, not an issue at 6.4 and nearly 16st, but factor in approx lb a day weight loss, which may be a problem if older or underweight already. Good luck all.

    3. if you had only one bowl movement in a week, it sounds to me like you were taking a whole lot of pain killers. It is the opiate pain killers that constipation. In America it says so on the bottle and you frequently get coupons for laxatives with the pills. I strongly recommend something very gentle, because laxatives can cause abdominal pain thats so much worse than constipation it's funny.

    4. I went 9 days before I had a bowel movement. But man did I have some awful toots.
And Jars is correct about opiates causing constipation, but at day 12 now I still haven't eaten solid foods, so don't expect many BMs if there isn't much to pass

    7. I am 30 years old and am on day 12. I, like most people, thought that this wouldn't be as painful as it was. I have been in chronic pain for 2 years with a foot issue and have had 2 surgeries and I might possibly need a third. So I thought this tonsillectomy would hurt but not that much. Boy, was I wrong. I never thought more about committing suicide as I did with this surgery. It felt as though I was swallowing razor blades for the first 8 days. It downgraded to swallowing nails on day 9 and thereafter. My tips would be to take your pain pill 30 minutes before eating as to lessen the pain. I also suggest watching tv while you eat so it helps to take your mind off the pain. It is ever so slightly but I found that it helps. I also strongly suggest drinking tons of water. I drank at least 3-4 liters a day because one day I didn't and the scabs dried out and it was worse than swallowing razor blades. I also suggest to sleep propped up or at 45 degree angle. I couldn't lay down (still can't) without gagging. My uvula is swollen as well as my tongue. I slept as much as I wanted. If I was tired, I went to sleep. Your body tells you what it needs and its best to listen...especially after such an excruciating surgery. I am hoping that the worst is over and that I can go on living a healthy life after this. Best wishes to all!

    11. This article is so spot on. I am with you on all 5 of these points. Reading this on Day 8 and actually giggling my head off at the accuracy. The pain has been so bad at times that I have felt nothing but total surprise that pain can be that bad. Hit a solid 10 for first time in my life this morning. Sleep is indeed the enemy. The swollen uvula on day 2 was so fucking alarming, I had no idea that was going to happen! Thought a chunk of flesh had come loose and I was slowly choking on it. Some huge positives though - I had an adenotonsillectomy (just to up the anti, for shits and giggles...except obviously no shits haha) so now I can nose-breathe for the first time ever. I quit smoking. No more weed. Haven't had a coffee or wine in 2 weeks and realise I don't need either (but will def partake again when the 4 craters in my head have healed). Thanks for this article! Sanity saver :) Cheers.

    12. Also will add that I alarmed by how few drugs some people here took. I was on high-level antibiotics twice a day, Anti-inflam twice a day but NOT neurofen/ibuprofen as these encourage bleeding. 2 x Panadol Osteo (650mg) every 6 hours. Tramadol 500mg twice a day. Oxycodone for days 5-8. Now on Valium (2mg 3 times a day), steroid-anti-inflams & Tramadol for the final run. It has still sucked but manageable. I have no idea how you guys have managed without this amount of pain management :-o

  3. I'm 31 and I had just had my tonsils outs...I'm on day 11 and the pain between days 5-11 are horrible. There were a few days I couldn't even talk. Icy's, ice water and popcicles are my best friend. Ice cream does not help with the pain at all.

  4. I had mine out 10 days ago. Im 29. For me the third way was the worst.. i wanted to punch somebody from all the pain. Hurts to swalow everything. But for real, keep water with ice with you the first 5 days. After that just suck it up. Im close to my 10th day and the pain lowered a lot. Its weird but in the last 2 days i really felt improvement. I calculate i should be fine in seven more days

  5. My Tonsillectomy was the absolute most horrible thing I ever went through. At one point, everything I swallowed would come out my nose. At day 5 I had to go to the E.R. Cuz I could not stop vomiting. I never cried so much my whole life. I was certain I was going to die everyday. I'm at day 25 now. Pain is almost non existent, although there still are a few scabs. The whole experience was so traumatizing, I've been getting panic attacks ever since. Good luck to you all.

Out of all the recovery and day by day stories i wish i read this one earlier I'm on day ten and i couldn't have been more happier i also thought i had a higher pain tolerance and was expecting a lower pain but longer longevity of the pain but they pain was unbelievable i cried like a baby some days but what made it worse was the fact that id get nauseous or sick to my stomach ugh i even vomited once can you say hell! I also would have waited

  7. I am keeping my fingers crossed...I am on day 8 and have to say it has been pretty plain sailing. Ate nothing but ice cream for the first 4 days and plenty of water. On a fairly high dose of cocodamol and ibuprofen for the pain every 4 hours keeps it at bay. The last 2 days have been the worst but the pain has been in my ears not my throat!! That has been pretty bad...but all in all nothing as bad as the horror stories I read and 100% worth it in the long run.

    3. The bad pain comes when you eat. I've stuck to protein shakes and mac and cheese from KFC which is pretty well tolerated. I've read a ton about issues from narcotics and I can't take them anyway so I did 800mg liquid Motrin every 4 hours, including when sleeping. I'm on day 5 and have changed to 650mg liquid Tylenol every 4 hours and 200mg Motrin (Motrin increases bleeding so I had to back off after some spotting). I've slept at least 8 hours each night waking up once at 4 hours to take meds and drink water. Zero constipation since no narcotics and zero need for weening off anything. My ears never hurt, but my jaw does when the Motrin starts to ware off. I haven't spoken since the surgery and don't see that changing for a while. Good luck, all! I'm 38 and female FYI.

  13. Omg I had mine out January 16th it's hell! I'm 37 and I'm pissed that doctors and nurses don't tell you how bad and long recovery is. They told me oh some people go back to work the next day?! I want to know who the hell those people were! So I told my office I may try to come in Monday which is today.......stupid I'm in excruciating pain and woke up feeling like someone took a 2x4 to my ear, jaw and neck! This is crazy if I knew the pain I too would have not done the procedure maybe that's why the doctor doesn't tell you how bad it really is. What sucks about that is I told my work oh yeah I'll be in 4-5 days.....yeah right and now they probably think I'm BSing. PS I can't take Motrin but what helps me is using an ice pack on your neck and u have to do that every 3 hours so it sux when u sleep longer than that cuz u wake up in pain. But it does help.

  15. I too, thought people were just exaggerating or being wusses when I heard stories from friends about having a tonsillectomy as an adult. Turns out, they were ALL true. My surgeon took out my tonsils, adenoids and also decided to reconstruct my uvula while he was in there. OMG! The first three days I thought I was going to suffocate. My throat was so swollen that I could barely get any liquid pain medicine down. Not only was the pain severe, but I also was panicking because I felt like I couldn't breathe. (note: I'm not a panicker) Sleep was awful. I didn't get out of the bed other than to use the restroom for 5 days. My doctor gave me three liquid medications to take, pain reliever, antibiotic, and something to tame my nausea. However, since I had such a hard time swallowing, I passed on the nausea medicine, so I ended up throwing up the first two days. PAIN PAIN PAIN! I would take the pain over the suffocating feeling however, which is why I decided to forgo the nausea meds. Every time I took medicine or drank water it would come out of my nose. One week after surgery, I was able to go to my daughter's musical, but I cried when I got home due to the pain I had to endure in order to do so. Just make sure you are doing it for the right reasons and not just because allergies or one a year problems.

    1. I wonder if your experience was AS horrible as it was because your uvula was reconstructed. In reading people's personal stories online, it seems that, while most people describe horribly intolerable pain, there is some variation in terms of the pain level and how it fluctuates throughout the days post surgery. I wonder if some of your pain might have been a bit more tolerable had you not had your uvula modified (e.g., easier breathing, slightly easier swallowing). I'm on Day 5 of post-op recovery and the pain has been excruciating ever since the evening of Day 1, and worst now than any of the preceding days. Swallowing liquids has been horrible. Moreover, I have saliva that's constantly present in my mouth (just hanging out there like it's at a bar with nothing better to do than to wait for someone to walk in so he can slide on over and try his newest sleazy 1-liner). This means either I let the ever-present saliva build and build (yes, it's as disgusting as you are imagining it to be) or I frequently swallow it down, causing me to be in constant pain even when I'm not trying to drink something. Everyone kept telling me to stock-up on ice cream, which I did like a good little sheep. It didn't occur to me, however, that perhaps these people don't have lactose problems. By the time I had greedily eaten a 1/3 of a tub on the first night, all the mucus it generated finally registered and I was in incredible discomfort: I couldn't swallow it because it was too thick and I couldn't clear my throat for fear of causing the dreaded bleeding. So, I lived with it for hours and hours until I finally coughed it up involuntarily on the first night (which, of course, caused me to bleed quite a bit). Also, everyone says ice, ices, and ice-cold liquids are good. Well, these cause me more pain, not less, so they're out of the question. Oh, and did I mention the intense ear and neck pain I feel? Did you have that? I understand they're also very common. I suppose this gets back to the "variability" thing where the most common thread is that almost all people experience horrible pain swallowing and also in their ears, but some have a bit less than others, some have it in fewer places than others, and some do better with some food while others do better with other food. As I said, I'm on Day 5 and I pray to G-d that the pain does NOT continue to worsen as some have said it did for them. How far along are you? Do you still regret the surgery at this point? Short of dying (G-d forbid), I don't imagine any pain will make me regret the surgery, but perhaps I can say that because I haven't had it as bad as some have, such as yourself.

    2. I am on day 7, and everyday I swear just gets worse. I am 24. After having strep throat, swollen tonsils, tonsilitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, and anything else that could cause my tonsils to become inflammed everytime I got sick I was certain this was the best decision. Lies! Had I known the amount of pain I am going through would be this intense I would have taken the strep throat for 500. By far the worst. My jaws still hurt. My ears hurt. And my neck. I has to get. A steroid on day 5 from having the swollen vulva and the excessive amount of mucous. I couldn't swallow and almost choked a few times on water alone. I found that hot tea does help soothe some, cold stuff eh sometimes it does. I feel like I am going insane. Tonight I have decided I am not sleeping because of the pain I woke up in this morning. Real sleep is definitely not an option. I am not fortunate enough to have any family close by, so I am on my own. And work I am expected to return on day 15. Ugh! I hope I feel much better, because right now I don't feel up to anything. Hopefully it all heals well, and will be worth it for all the pain it has caused.

  16. So, I just scheduled my surgery for two months out (almost). I have had issues with my tonsils since I was a kid (my parents thought I was a hypochondriac). As I have gotten older, the problems have increased and now are not only in my throat but are causing problems with my asthma. My sore throats are so bad that I go days without eating because I can barely swallow water (and pills because I am stubborn). A few weeks ago my tonsils were so swollen I looked like a hamster with its pouches full. From everyone's posts I have learned many things. 1) Have ice readily available. 2) Drink lots of water despite the pain. 3) make sure to have pain meds filled prior to surgery. 4). Have someone to help you out for the first 10 days. 5) Warm liquids may help (my remedy for when I have issues anyways). 6) do not be afraid to demand stronger meds if needed (my doc usually uses percocet which I am allergic to and does not help me on a good day, he is thinking Demerol and some liquid tylenol and liquid Ibuprofen). 7) Use Ice packs for pain. 8) Take cat naps (10-15 minutes) rather than sleeping (not hard as I often do not sleep anyways. 9) Have a syringe to suck excess saliva from my mouth to avoid having to swallow it. 10) Pain will be the worst on days 5-11 so make sure you take it easy. 11) and advice from my sister-in-law: It may feel good to talk while on pain meds, but you will soon realize that is a mistake when those meds wear off...DO NOT TALK!

I have to say that I am scared as I know I am a baby when it comes to pain. I can tolerate high levels of pain, but know (especially after reading everyone's responses) that I will be miserable. I like to get horror stories because then I am prepared or am pleasantly surprised when it is not as bad as those stories. Thank you everyone for posting and telling the truth. I know that in the long run this will be beneficial even if I do not think so at the time. After a long history of issues, severe pain, calcified crap in my tonsils, and having a tonsil that looks like ground hamburger meat, I am looking forward to a day when I can be the one who is healthy for once.

    2. First of all I'd just like to say that i have spent the last 5 days looking up everything i can on tonsillectomies, as i a 25 year old female just had her tonsils removed as they were beyond large and giving me constant infections. I also had mass amounts of nasal polyps removed from my sinus on both sides, as i have been living with chronic sinusitis for the last 4+ years. I was told before hand how horrid the operation would be, as the ENT decided it would be best to get both surgeries done at once. I have a very low pain tolerance, but i was tired of the pains and mucus and the living off antibiotics. So i decided to do the operation. Now i have been through labour and i swear the pain/discomfort i have gotten from this opetation has been worse, in fact I'd rather go through another 42 hour labour, then to ever have to experience this pain again. However, along my healing journey of utter pain and discomfort, I've done a lot of reading (mainly to take my mind off the pain/to help pass the time) and i have found a few helpful things that one might like to know if they are about to go through the operation.
Water, i know everyone says it but honestly it helps so much. Never stop sipping! Luke warm water helps a treat also, sometimes it worked better for my tonsils then freezing water.
Swish warm water around your mouth gently, before bed, when you wake up, or whenever you have some free time. This has helped me so much, sometimes more then the pain medication. The warm water just helps with the pain, yet no one mentioned this to me.
Take your medication, don't wait an extra hour to see if it still hurts, because it does, it really does. Take your medications when you've been told to take them.
Eat, i know it hurts, but use water/ice to help you eat. It makes you feel better in the stomach so you don't feel sick taking your medication and helps with the healing process. Your body needs nutrition! I ate, soups (blended), jelly, custard, ice-block, milkshakes. If i was feeling pretty good I'd place some crustless bread into my soup then eat it. It does hurt, but you need to eat.
I drank a lot of tea with honey it in. Just straight black tea with 2 tea spoons of honey. This was great to just sip through a straw while wstching netflix. Again the warm water really helped my throat.
Compresses, i used both hot and cold compresses. Depending on how i was feeling, but a nice warm compress under an aching ear can go a long way at 2 am.
Rest, I'm lucky enough to have my husband run around after both me and our daughter at this time so i can get all the recovery that i need. Sometimes I'll go to the kitchen and get some water or tuck my daughter in bed. But mostly i relax in bed trying to distract myself from the discomfort.
I have also been using butter menthols, just gently sucking on them throughout the day and they have really helped.
Also I've been using a stool softener as the medications I'm taking apparently make you constipated, which is the last thing i want.

  17. I just got mine out like 4 days ago. After the surgery i was really not in much pain but when i swallow it's kinda hurt. I'm fifteen, and i don't like to 'not come to school'. if i don't come to school my teacher will gave me alot of homework and i would be so stressed out. i was hoping that i would recover on the next 5 days after the surgery, but as i read your comments it does getting worst. sleeping and bed used to be my best friends but scared of the pain, i tried not to sleep. And my ear is literally killing me, my weight is decreased cause im not able to eat because of my throat. i was just hoping that i would recover soon and i can eat double cheese burger and kentucky fried chicken again sighh. good luck to you guys too !

    1. Your still young and recovery period wont be as bad, as older adults. You mention ear aches and i still have it. Some days it hurts worse than others and it does subside. Today is day 8 after surgery and i feel so much better than i did. Throat still sore and sharp pain here and there. Honestly everyone was able to eat soft food day 3 or so. I was not..it was terrible. I just started soft solid food and still have some trouble. You need lots of popsicles and i tried orangesicles n those help. Try drinking tea n it will soothe ur throat everything i drink even gatorade burns. Good luck on your recovery, just hang in there. You may or may not be able to talk. I couldnt talk til day 8 and it was horrible. Again. Get well soon. :)

  18. I'm 9 hours out of my tonsillectomy! Pain sucks but I had strep 7 times in 5 months with a paratonsilar abscess and this pain is SO FAR better then the abscess pain. I hope it stays that way! Good luck to you all!

  19. I am day 5 into my recovery and it has been by far the worst thing I have ever experienced. my first night I didn't sleep at all because the pain was so bad...The next day I was a real love zombie. a nap here and there kinda helped but not really much. broth and apple juice were my best friends. popsicles do somewhat help but the cold was really my enemy. I would have a brief moment that I can have something cold and the next moment I just cant eat cold things. soup with mini pasta noodles are also my new best friend. the Tylenol with codeine.....doesn't really help me at all!!!!! I want ibuprofen!!!!!! right now the scabs are slowly peeling off and I can see new flesh but what sucks is that the new flesh is very sensitive. but what I don't understand is why my uvula and tongue are still swollen??? I want them back to normal now. I had to have a tonsillectomy because I would constantly have to fight sore throats and tonsillitis...both would get to the point where my tonsils would swell up so bad my most recent fight with my tonsils was in february. I got a really bad sore throat and I thought it would be fine...like another typical sore throat. I was soooo wrong. I had to go to the ER because I had a sore throat, a really high fever and my tonsils were so huge that they were closing my airway! I went to the ENT and he even said the tonsils need to come out. well, they gone and now the scabs r peeling off. I just hope to be able to talk soon. I can talk but it strains my throat and u really can't understand me. good luck to anyone who recently had the procedure or will soon have it.

I did find a trick to that horrific ear pain every time you swallow. Good old ear plugs! I think the negative pressure help with less pain and easier swallowing.

  29. Thanks for all the horror stories, folks. I'm 29 and just got my tonsils out this morning. My doctor told me to expect recovery to take 10-14 days and was very up front about how much pain I'd be in. But so far I'm doing okay. I've only popped 2 ibuprofen all day and I'm lying here thinking "this isn't bad at all. Maybe I should google and see if this is the worst of it." Apparently not. Off to drink more Gatorade.

I had some swelling last night that was uncomfortable so I took myself off the prescribed pain meds and have stuck with 600mg IBP every 5.5 hours since yesterday. The swelling feels better. I drink water at least hourly, I set the alarm so I wake up if I am sleeping. I have been drinking Boost and Jamba Juice in addition to water. My husband has been crushing all of my pills and I have been eating them in pudding. I have been sleeping propped up next to my warm mist humidifier. So far so good...All the bad and scary comments on here worry me for what is to come but so far it has been eons easier than expected.

I still have swelling, which makes it hard to talk and swallow. It still hurts to swallow. And talking becomes very painful after a while. I work worth customers all day and I have to talk to them. Its killer. My tongue is still a little swollen and in pain.
My pain now is nowhere near what it was. Days 5-7 were the worst. And then I had up and down days.. still do. I have given birth 2 times and I would say that this beats that pain any day.
I think your heal time depends on you. dont expect it to just be better. Expect longer heal time than what was prescribed

  33. Wow! So glad to hear I am not just a 38 year old, female wimp. Haha I am just one year out from a very very difficult hysterectomy which resulted in sepsis and a long stay in the hospital. Only to find out I have been going through the symptoms of tonsillitis during this year long recovery from a botched hysterectomy. Needless to say my immune system is a bit shot and my body is sluggish at best. Let me tell ya, i have been through some intense pain in the last year. I had my tonsillectomy 7 days ago. Good Lord! The pain has been very hard to control. Which, in turn, has most certainly affected my sleep. Last night I slept four hours straight! The first of ANY sleep since is was under anesthesia seven days ago. The sleep helped my body get rest, but when I woke...The pain was awful. I have resorted to cutting the liquid codine dose in half and taking every two hours instead of every four, at the full dose. It has helped some. It may be because in my mind, I know it will only be two more hours to bare, rather than four until I get some slight relief. Eating is a joke. Haha Though my new best friend is sopping wet gravy bread. Warning: DO NOT ATTEMPT BABY FOOD! In all my wisdom, I thought it would be good and full of nutrients. No go. It is also full of absorbing acid, which turned my throat, neck, ears and head into a lava hot, throbbing, painful experience. Other than stated above, I am in top notch shape. :-) Seems that a good attitude and a little humor is all that is going to any of us through this. I am looking forward to some good days and less painful days, in the next month. Yeah yeah, two weeks the doc said. Two weeks until ya can START trying normal foods and low key activities. I am attempting to work from home during this recovery. Honestly, just sitting at my computer, handling business absolutely wrecks me. I am shooting for one month and hopefully be back in the saddle. We shall see...Good luck and take care, to all those who are going through their own adult tonsillectomy. :-) ♡♡

  38. Male age 44 tonsillectomy.
Immediately post op. I was in a lot of pain which was only just dealt with by oromorph. I was close to being admitted to the High Dependency Unit for IV morphine. I was kept in hospital overnight.
The next day the pain had subsided and I was given ibuprofen and paracetamol to take home, prescribed by the surgeon.
The only thing that helped the pain was some ice cream.
The pain day 2 and 3 was 3/10, nothing worse than a normal sore throat and I was able to eat reasonably normally.
Day 4 I woke with my throat in much more pain. I had very dense scabs in tonsil spaces, some of which sloughed off after a bit of food. Swallowing became painful.
Day 5 the pain was now up to a 9/10 and the meds. had no effect. Not sleeping and unable to eat or drink. Swallowing sips of water was excruciating.
Day 6 early hours the pain was 10/10 and almost unbearable. Couldn't even think and was desperate. Went back to emergency dept. at hospital. Put on IV paracetamol drip and Diclofenac with oral liquid co-codamol. Pain then eased to bearable level in emergency room.
Prescribed 1000mg tablets of co-codamol, 50mg Diclofenac, anaesthetic throat spray and advised to also take Tramadol when pain was bad. Also given antibiotics in case of any infection.
Day 7-9 pain was 10/10 unless I took all the prescribed meds. which completely knocked me out, either to sleep or floating around the room. Was scared to sleep as this dried out my throat and when I woke it felt like my throat was being blow torched, until the next meds. took effect.
Days 10-11 had the pain slowly easing off enabling me to drop my meds dosage, come off the Tramadol and co-codamol. Finally being able to eat small amounts of food, though swallowing still very painful.
Day 12 had the pain drop to a background of 4/10 and meds. down to 2 Diclofenac a day.
Day 13 was first day I started to feel a bit like myself. Energy levels returning and able to do some normal low level activities but still with background pain around 3/10.
Day 14 was the first day background pain occasionally became unnoticeable, though swallowing still hurt but only at a level around 3/10.
Day 15 was first day without and meds. Occasional background pain with swallowing at level of 2/10. Able to eat and drink normally for the first time.
Day 16 and 17 has background pain only on waking up for around first half hour. Swallowing pain getting slightly better each day. Able to function normally.
Overall, a much worse recovery than anticipated, with several days where even swallowing was so painfull I couldn't eat or drink anything - getting dehydrated and an unbearable background pain, taking me back into hospital. The only answer was to get so dosed up on painkillers I was completely spaced out.
Now on Day 17 and still recovering, with typical sore throat level pain when swallowing.
Scabs now just thin covering of tonsil spaces. Uvula almost back to normal size.

  39. Day 1 felt good due to anaesthesia needed to spit a lot, lots of saliva builds up. Drinking all time throughout the day, painful to swallow but no worse than usual tonsillitis. Managed yoghurt, soup and cold smoothie (really good).
Day 2 made a chart for times to take tablets so can time them for eating and sleeping. Keep drinking water, smoothie and soup.
Day 3 missed a tablet as overslept and throat very sore, make sure you set your alarm for meds and drinking so you don't get dehydrated which is more painful.
Day 4 worse so far, hardly any sleep. Mouth tastes vile, scabs smell yuk. Keep rinsing mouth out and spitting out bits of scab. Keep drinking and smoothie and managed normal meal (stirfry veg, chicken and rice) now but take tablets 20 minutes
    before
Day 5 same, keep drinking regularly and taking pain meds. Still painful to swallow and talking only when on meds.waking up worse if throat dry. Setting alarm still for drinks/meds.
    Age 34 hope this helps.

  41. I'm 31 and was two days post op. It's really painful to swallow and there's a lot of throat, neck and jaw pain. I can feel fluids backing up in my nose and had to relearn to swallow. I tried eating cooled down porridge but I threw it up anyway, my friend brought me usana's nutrimeal and I'm glad she did since I was put on diabetic, cold soft food diet. I was prescribed betadine gargle and anti inflammatory spray. Thank goodness my doctor made me an anasthetic gargle solution. I'm gonna set alarms for my meds and hydration as most suggested. Stocking up on popsicles and sugar free mint gum as per doctor's recommendation. Those helped a lot in keeping the area moist and almost numb.

  44. Today I had my tonsils removed. I am 21 and the pain so far isn't as bad as everyone is making it sound. It feels like what my typical strep throat us to feel like. I am on Percocet and ibuprofen and zoferen to prevent vomiting from the pain meds. I have eaten jello, mashed potatoes, and sherbet today and staying very hydrated. My doctor recommends iced tea so I am drinking the raspberry pure leaf tea along with water and Gatorade and the tea feels amazing and that it soothes some pain. I was told to also gargle lightly with warm salt water and to apply an ice pack to the neck. I have been doing all of this today. The only issues I have encountered so far is that the Percocet makes me off balance and that my uvula is sooooo swollen that I can not find a comfortable postition to sleep tonight. I will make a post throughly my surgery.

  45. I am 18. I am on night 5.
The worst part for me was ear pain, I curre have ear plugs in for some slight comfort but nothing works. It started straight after surgery and I looked at my pillow during the night and there was blood on it the nurse had ignored my lack of hearing and sore ears all day and said it was fine. The surgeon visited me the following morning and said I had a burst blood vessel in one ear and fluid build up in the other. I am taking otrovine nasal spray for them?
I have had such bad experiences with my tonsils that the throat pain itself does not scare me , as long as I take my mess when I'm supposed to, I was too tired to get up and skipped my 2am tablets one night, NEVER SKIP MEDS!! I was in te worst pain of my life my whole face and neck were swollen and I didn't recover till the following day.
A lot of people have said they couldn't sleep, until today(day5) I've had the opposite problem I cou stay awak . Which I am beyond grateful for for the skipping the nausea which comes from the pain of such strong mess on an empty stomach but also a curse because if I slept for too long (2hours) my throat was so dry and sore. I haven't set alarms for drinking yet I seem to wake a necessary amount as it is.
The one thing that does scare me are these little 'bits' I keep swallowing. I ate ice cream one and got the most uncomfortable build up of mucus all day yesterday so I drank water cut it out and today it has gone, woo. But these bits are they scabs? If not what are they? And what is the best way to deal with the scabs that is what I'm scared of. Please help?

  46. I'm 25 and I had a tonsillectomy and turbinate reduction which is an inner nose surgery. I'm now on day 7. I recorded each day and the levels of pain I experienced. I have to admit, the first three days are aggravating due to almost continuous blood seeping out my nose. It was happening so often I thought I might bleed out. Well on the fifth day, I took a vacation to Florida and hung out on the beech and threw football. By that time the ear pain started to kick in. After finally finding a pharmacy that had hydrocodone (I went to 5) I had it refilled and felt better in no time. I think I only have a couple more days of pain but in my experience the worst has been swallowing foods and drinking and ear pain. Id give the consistent pain a rating of 2 except when eating. Beeides that it's been bearable. Good luck

  47. I was told to get a spray bottle of water and spray your throat every time you wake up. It seems to have helped so far, but pain is definitely still there. I was also advised by a friend to try 1:1 mixture or children's liquid Benadryl and Maalox because it will numb the throat- it numbs the tongue too though.
I'm 4 days out with pain about 4-6/10. The last hour before being able to take the pain meds has been brutal.
I'm 34, and like many others, this pain is almost worse than that of labor b/c after you have a kid, you get the reward. ;) This just seems to be consistent and throbbing with no clear end in sight.
I would advise you to brush up on sign language if you know any of it and to enjoy the time that you get to spend listening to little ones tell their stories. :) I have definitely been thankful for that aspect of it.
    Good luck!

  48. I'm 25 and 9 days post opt! The doctor told me this surgery was going to suck and he wasn't kidding! The purpose of my tonsillectomy was to stop my tonsil stones once and for all.

Surgery day was pretty bad. I had to stay at the hospital a lot longer because of how nauseous I was. I was certain I was going to throw up, but after two cups of lemon Italian ice, I was fine and able to go home.

The doctor gave me liquid percocet and an antibiotic. He told me I could take extra strength tylenol when the percocet wore off. Night two, that all backfired on me. I spent the night throwing up and my pain level was off the charts. I thought seriously about going to the emergency room, but I waited it out and I was okay.

Days 3-8 were awful. I didn't have a ton of throat pain, but the pain in my ears was excruciating. The only thing that helped was keeping an icepack on my throat and a heating pad wrapped around my ears. I couldn't talk. Everything I did say, I would have to repeat because no one heard me the first time. Lots of pointing and thumbs up and thumbs down. Water made me nauseous, so I stuck with gatorade and apple juice most of the time. Yawning hurt. Hiccups hurt. I slept a lot. The percocet knocked me out, so I would set an alarm for meds and drinking. Keeping a humidifier on 24/7 helped tremendously. I could get down scrambled eggs, pudding, sorbet, and italian ice. I'm now at the point where I just don't even want to see those foods for a very long time.

Yesterday, I was over salivating and my tongue was white and clumpy. I knew something was wrong. I developed oral thrush, aka a yeast infection in my mouth (yuck). I ended up seeing an urgent care doctor and now I'm on diflucan all week. My ENT called me last night and told me I did the right thing seeing the urgent care doctor and luckily it's clearing up already.

It's now day 9 and I finally feel human again! I even went out for a pedicure! I'm just so happy to feel semi-normal again. It's been one of the crappiest weeks of my life, but never having to worry about tonsil stones has made it worth it.

  49. I am 28 years old. I had my tonsillectomy 7 days ago. I have felt no pain. I was only on paracetamol (the dosage you would take for a headache) every 6 hours. On day 5 I took a stronger med but only for 24hrs. I ate normal, drank normal, slept normal. Probably slept too much. My advice is to eat as normal as possible and chew bubblegum on days 3 and 4. You don't need to eat foods like icrecream or custard or jelly. You can eat normal foods. Just nothing hot (wait for the meal to cool), nothing spicy and nothing sharp (like pork crackle). I didn't need a syringe, ear plugs, an alarm to wake up to have water none of anything anyone has said. Just normal pain killers and everything else is normal. Gosh you all freaked me out when I read our experiences on day 1 and I freaked out for nothing. I also didn't do what any of you suggested which is probably why I recovered so god dam well. Hahahahahaha. I guess I'm just being a bitch about it because you all did work me up and I was scared every day waiting to experience what you all describe as the worst pain. But I felt nothing, zilch, zero, no pain. I was hoping to lose weight too coz so many of you said you did but nope I ate normal every day. Maybe I have a good surgeon. Maybe I recover well in general. I did have all 4 wisdom teeth out earlier this year and wasn't in pain then too. So yeah maybe it's just me. Anyways, if you're reading this, my advice is to listen to your surgeon. If he says eat normal then eat normal don't go buying custard and have a liquid only diet. That's what will cause a post bleed. Just eat and take your pain killers!

    1. I am glad I scrolled down and saw your message. I had my tonsils put yesterday 4.30 pm I'm on a lot of med and been home for 12 hours. I can eat fine and drink fine. Every now and then I get pain but it's just more like an ache on swallowing when it's dry. The other posts were freaking me out !! I'm 24 yrs old so I'm hoping tomorrow being technically my day 3 it will get easier after that. Also I was a smoker so dying to have a cig :( obviously I'm not going to ... not until I gave zero pain and can gargle etc . Thank you for your post I will keep thinking postively and hope I don't have a bad recovery like others on here.

  50. 36, constantly getting tonsil stones and various throat issues over the years. ENT suggested I have the tonsils removed. Had the surgery on Wed and was smooth, no pain. Was discharged the following day and stay on paracetamol and anelgisics. Sunday evening (day 4), ambulance rushed me to ER with an ENT on standby as I had haemorrhage bleeding from where one of the tonsils were removed. HELL that was as I was swallowing blood and it happened while I was sleeping. They brought me into theatre for immediate operation(3am Monday morning) to re-cauterise the area. So I've been told my two week recovery has been reset and will see how it goes again.

It is Tuesday today and I think they will discharged me to recover at home. The thought of what the next few week has to offer brings me to tears.

    1. Btw, I had mild to severe ear ache on that Sunday which later subsided after the re-cauterise. Haven't opened my bowel for the past 5 days, perhaps due to the diet.. Sleepless nights for sure, probably best to stay in bed throughout the day as well as the 10min naps here and there help.

  51. Please, id like to add a few tips to the title article. Ive had mine out 6 days ago and never felt so much pain, constant sweating and shaking from the pain's adrenaline release.
But some things that have helped so far:
    1) The exposed area in the throat cant control its Osmosys. So it's REAAALLY important that you try to swallow liquids that are not too concentrated nor too little concentrated, and never acidic! For me, cold water with 2 pinches of salt and 2 spoons of honey made for a drink that immediately stopped the aching. You should try to hit the 0 9% salt saline solution mark or close to that. Pure water rushes into the wounds and hurts it.

2)Topical anesthetic( like tetracaine, lidocaine sprays or benzocaine candy) have a small lasting effect but its really strategic prior to trying to eat something. Just try not to swallow any as it gives me immediate nausea. Turn your head to the side so the anesthetic runs down into the wound at each side and wait a few seconds for it to sit there.

    3) NSAID painkillers are the most powerful in cutting inflammatory pain. Instead of drowning in vicodin/percocet/etc (opioids, they give me bad nausea and dont cut so much pain), try to have a constant dose of ibuprofen, or diclofenac (much more powerful), if you are not allergic, of course.

  58. To everyone who is going, or will go, through the horrific, unbearable pain of a tonsillectomy, I want to give you all some hope and reassurence. THE PAIN WILL END! Eventually, after a couple weeks, you will feel much better. Eventually, long after the pain has ended, you will be left with a lifetime of better health. I certainly am SO happy I had my tonsils removed even though I was in excrutiating pain afterward. Two weeks of miserable pain pain was well-worth it (although my wife says I was a horrible, irritable, grumpy person to be around for those two weeks). Good luck everyonbe!

I was able to eat a Lil tuna... and some pancakes drenched in syrup.. not a big appetite but I do believe this surgery's total recovery time is probably 20-25 days. I wanted to kill myself Days 1-6 but 7 was a Lil bether and hopefully 8 on will be as well... just wanna make it to day 12.. that's my goal

  59. I'm 32 and I am on day 6 of recovery and was doing fine until yesterday. Yesterday the ear pain started and nothing seems to help the stabbing pain in both my ears. Today, I have woken up and my throat actually hurts for the first time. I'm on a regular 4 hr schedule of Demerol and Tylenol but it's not working as well as it did the first few days. I had actually started eating soft food pretty well but back to water and popcicles I guess. Is this when the scabs are supposed to start falling off? Definitely not looking forward to that. Good luck everyone else!

  60. Day 3 for me. Im 35 female and i feel i have a higher pain tolerance level. Im in some pain for sure. Its radiating in my jaw and ears a bit but my tongue is surprisingly the worst pain. I read how bad it would be so i tried to get ready for it. I mainly try to just bear through the pain.
For me my biggest concern is staying calm. Anything that raises my blood pressure hurts. So im hiding away from my 3 and 4 year old until im better.
Reading all these stories all i can think is i cant wait for it to be over.
I cant eat anything except runny yogurt. I tried broth, pudding, ice cream, popsicles, Gatorade... but cant handle it. I did a warm water, salt, and baking soda rinse that really helped my mouth feel better.
Good luck to everyone and speedy recoveries to all

  61. Day 3 for me today, 33 yo male. I think I took for granted the morphine in my system from op day/day 2 as I was feeling confident after eating toast and left over Christmas food. Last night I was up all night watching youtube, spitting into a glass and attempting to drink water. My head hurts, my jaw hurts, my temples hurt. I said to myself I will try on just 30mg of Codeine to see how well that lasts, I lasted 6 hours.
Now as people are saying, make sure you time your medications to the minute to reduce the "pain window".
I've just seen some small pieces of scab in my glass, hopefully a good sign.
Good luck to everyone who has had this and, to people who are awaiting this operation, ignore my moaning. The reward is worth a few days of pain... keep that as your goal.

When i was 47 I had my tonsils, adenoids, uvula removed, while at the same time had the back of my throat cut and about an inch of skin across the top removed to open up my airway. The back of my throat was all stitches. I was given liquid morphine for the pain. I could not take the morphine as it made me sick, so i only took Tylenol. The pain reminded me of having strep throat. It sucked but was bearable. I had to suck the phlegm out the back of my throat with a baster so i could breath. All in all in the long run it was worth the discomfort, I no longer suffer massive headaches or have clogged sinuses from allergies. Also breath much better.

  64. 29 year male, day 7. I've had my appendix out and I'd take that over this. First couple days were misleading, days 4-6 were really tough. Sleep is the worst. If I could do the last couple days over again I would have set alarms to keep my throat wet. My taste buds are pretty shot from all the cold. Been able to stomach pudding, eggs, mashed potatoes, fish, noodles—but in small quantities and once in 24 hours. The rest of the time Popsicles and sherbet (non-dairy helps reduce pleghem generation)

  65. I also echo getting a humidifier and just adopt a bottle of liquid as an appendage. My doctor gave me tetracaine lollipops which help with surface numbing/irritation. Fortunate to have not dealt with Nausea since first 36 hours. It was so comforting to hear from others similar experiences. I'm hoping today to mostly be on just Tylenol and see how it goes.

So I'm 28 years old. I got my procedure done on Wednesday morning and it's currently Sunday night. First 2 days I was able to take a lower dose of medicine but have had to increase it to almost double...I can say that motrin/ibuprofen is a huge help and constantly chewing ice chips. Also, today is the first day I was actually able to talk a little. But After a few sentences here and there my throat is tired. I am also getting dizzy/lightheaded when I try to walk around. My husband says it's from lack of food, he's probably right. My encouragement through all of this is I'm losing weight lol and no more tonsillitis!

  69. I'm 20 years old,had my gallbladder out 2 years ago due to gallstones, pancreatitis and a stomach infection. In all honesty...I would rather have that than go through this. I knew huge beasty men that cried from gallstones alone.
I'm on day 5, and I think I've had overall roughly 8 hours sleep over 5 days. The pain after sleeping is horrendous, it's stopped me from taking meds on time due to not being able to swallow.
Ended up back in the hospital in AnE the first two mornings (we wasn't told anything about after care) and got told I had an infection. Was doing everything we were told, but wasn't told about gargelling. Warm salt water does help, but have it lukewarm, otherwise you just burn your throat. It hurts, but it does help.
Ice cream and yoghurts absolutely kill, juices and jellys are the same for me. So I'm literally living on water as and when I can and nothing else.
All my meds (co codamol, ibruprofen and penicillin) are all liquid, but my god do they hurt! I'm mainly only taking anti biotics because I have to get better. Given up on pain relief, causes more pain to take.
My op took 2 years to get and got cancelled 4 times. I should've took the sign. Deffinatly regret having it done, I used to get tonsillitis every 3 weeks for 8-10 months at one point. But right now, I wish I'd never had it done.
Good luck to anyone going through this, it's awful x

  71. I wish I would have read all these reviews before getting a double tonsilectamy! I'm on day 4 and I'm 20 years old. I've had a history of strep throat and so many other problems for the last three years. I had heard that the older you get the harder the recovery but 20 isn't too old so I figured I'd get it now. And man oh man! One of the worst experiences of my life. Thank god I live with my family still because there's literately no way I could do this on my own. Each day has gotten worst than the last, I've heard that staying hydrated is really all you can do to avoid worsening your symptoms. So that hasn't been too hard, I'm always wanting to cool down and get my throat wet. The hardest part is sleeping or going over the three/four hour period without taking more meds! You wake up its hell. Then you have to try and swallow your pain meds with your throat like that?? No thanks!! Also my sinuses have been so bad my ears hurt like crazy! The only thing that helps is to sit in a peircing hot shower for a long time. The steam takes away the sinus pressure a bit. Really getting good amounts of rest is the best thing. The nausea is what gets me. I haven't been able to eat (not even chicken noodle soup) because I get too nauseous walking around that I'll puke! I've lost ten pounds as of today, Day 4. Literately just drinking water and Gatorade. Mashed potatoes isn't hard to get down. Please please do your research before getting this surgery! Seriously I just wait for death when I get up each morning. And I haven't been able to sleep more than an hour without waking up. Day 1 was actually the easiest, all hopped up on pain meds. Having everything go through your IV instead of your mouth. I just cry everyday. Most times when I swallow it goes up my nose first and then down my throat. So disgusting. Yesterday I threw up and it came out my nose. Yuck! So far it hasn't been worth it. Looking forward to days 7-9 as those are supposed to be better.

  72. I'm on day 5 of my tonsillectomy. Yesterday was my worst day by far! So much pain, swelling. It felt like razors when I swallowed. I went into the local emergency room and asked for a steroid shot in my butt. It was the best decision ever! My pain went from a literal 10 to a livable 4-5, considering. I'm hoping it stays this way for the remainder of healing.

  85. Hey! I'm 20 and I had my surgery 6 days ago. The first night I stayed in hospital and got 2 injections and they are the best pain killers ever. After that when I got home I am drinking pain killers every 5 hours and drinking a lot of water (IT HELPS SO MUCH), you can also drink tea but it has to be on room temperature and not hot. My worst day was day 4 because than may ears started to hurt. Well doc told me it is concequence of swallowing, and my teath also hurt a little bit. You can brush your teath regulary and you will feel much better. I'm also not eating very much, but I recomand soups and icecreams because it is easy to swallow. It is very important to check your salive because of the blood, if there is no blood then it is ok.
Sleep...worst enemy. I'm not regretting the surgery, but I really whant pain to stop and to be healthy again so I an eat normaly.

Scared that I will get dehydrated and have to be readmitted so trying my best to drink liquids. Be prepared for pain, trust me it is horrible. 90. 42 yr old, just beginning day 3 post surgery. I read this entire blog before I went in for the procedure, thinking I have a high pain tolerance. Yesterday, I missed my percocet time, and was in excruciating pain. I won't make that mistake again. I'm beginning to think that the 60 tablets won't be enough!! Swallowing is very difficult. Water is hardest to swallow, something with a bit more substance seems easier. I've been awake a lot, as sleep does dry out the throat. I've yet to discover a way to sleep that is easy. The meds seem to just keep me awake. I will post again as time goes by. If you are getting ready to have this done, I wish you a speedy recovery. Take meds every 4 hours...don't try to push them off. The pain is NOT worth it!

  91. 26 year old female. I couldn't believe all these horror stories I read about this surgery. It almost deterred me from getting it, but since I needed a biopsy of my tonsil to figure out why I've been so bed ridden, swollen, and I'll for 5 months, it had to be done. I'm lucky to have had good doctors, anesthesiologists (who had tonsillectomy 2 years ago) at a top rated medical hospital. Please do your research and don't settle on where you get this major procedure! I made sure I told them ALL my worries, strengths, weaknesses, I've been through worse emotionally, but not pain wise. So I was a bit scared. Made sure they gave me a higher dose of liquid pain medication, plus added a nausea tablet. I drink water CONSTANTLY even through the pain, and it definitely makes it go a lot easier. I do have days I cry, and violently shake from the pain but nothing is near death I would say. I stopped talking completely after day 2, going on day 6 and yes, pain is still there, but again, nothing to worry about. This is coming from someone who has anxiety, worrying and thinking about the pain makes it worse. I drink 1 protein smoothie with peanut butter, banana, extra berries, strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, 1 coconut water, 1 cup mashed up raspberries with my pain medicine each time, and drink constant ice water. Please don't stop drinking water and be patient with the healing time. Thankfully the doctors let me know going into this that its a 2-4 week process for some so take it easy and don't feel bad about needed to get babied essentially.

I actually drove myself back to the emergency room and got readmitted I'm now on day 11 and still crying like a baby.

  97. My post contrasts with the bulk of the comments. 37 currently (38 in December) and I have been putting off the tonsillectomy for a number of years. Finally had the procedure done 8 hours back, still at the hospital now. Apparently need to spend the night. Feeling fine and no pain with very slight discomfort. Hoping it won't get won't get worse over the coming days. The doctor had instructed the nurse to have pain meds (Perfalgan) administered intravenously but I declined. Actually want to ask the doc if I can head home without spending the night. Really craving a pizza now.

Wishing a pain-free procedure to anyone about to go ahead with it.

  98. 38, female, surgery was at 730am on oct 28. Im on day 6 now and it's getting better. Day 5 was the worst. I started spotting and had to come off Motrin, which was how I was surviving. But today I took Tylenol and a little Motrin and I'm feeling good again. Motrin makes bleeding more likely but REALLY helps the pain since it reduces swelling and doesn't cause the addicting or constipation of narcostics.

  99. 30, female, Nov 4, 2016 was my tonsilectimy and I totally thought my doc was exaggerating when she said it's the worst pain in my life. Day 1 wasn't so bad. Day 2 wasn't either. Day 3 I cried & Day 4 (today) my throat & ears feel like somebody is stabbing me with a jagged edge sword. 5mg of oxycodone is a joke & not working. The pain does seem to be getting worse each day but I signed up for this legal torture so I'm praying in the next week it gets better. If not, there's not much I can do but continue to suffer & get waited on hand and foot by my family...which is nice

  100. Honey! They'll tell you not to, but just take 800mg of liquid ibuprofen every 4 hours. It gets rid of the swelling and helps SOOOOOO much. Oxy is just a pain killer and won't help that way. Put ice on your neck (careful not to make yourself pass out) and get a Popsicle. The IB makes bleeding more likely on days 7 and on, so try to minimize after that, replace with childrens tylenol. Also, get liquid lidocaine, it helps once the scabs start to come off. Good luck!!!

  101. Well im on day 9. I would say the pain is around 6/10 to 8/10 the first 5 days. Following that ive had spurts up to 10/10 which have continued until now. Have been managing to get water down but food and talking are pretty non existent. Have been downing an actimel a day to try to keep my gut going somewhat but anything else my throat just doesnt want to know. Drug wise have been on coamoxiclav for a week, 400mg of Ibuprofen every 8 hours and the same with 500mg of paracetamol and 100mg of tramadol although have laid off the tramadol and paracetamol today as it doesnt appear to be doing much. Everyday I wake up an wonder if today is the day ive turned the corner and can start talking without pain or actually be able to eat something. So far no such luck...

  103. I would like to let all know that the size of your Penis really matters in your relationship or marriage. I got married to my wife about 1 month after we met on a photo studio, we lived happily for the first 3 months of our marriage until i and my wife started having quarrels at home because i couldn't satisfy her on bed with my little penis. Actually my penis was very small, it measured about 4.5 inch long on erection and i am 33 years old. My wife said it was forbidden by the women of this world. My wife started sleeping with other men outside. Sometimes i will return from work without finding my wife at home and whenever i call or ask her where she was, she will always snub at me and sometimes just tell me to go get a larger dick. All this continued for a long time and it hurt me so much that i was at the edge of breaking up on the marriage till when i read about a doctor called DR. UBALO online. I never thought i could smile and be in a happy marriage again if not for the help of DR.UBALO. I got the doctors Emails: drubalospellcaster@gmail.com. on the internet and i emailed him, and he got back to me with some encouraging words, he got me some herbs which i use for just 8 days and i began to feel the enlargement of my penis, and without surgery. This went on for a little period of about 10 days and to my surprise my wife keeps screaming that she love my big dick now. Now my wife no longer cheat on me, and my penis is now about10.5 inches long on erection and off course very large round. And now my wife uses breasts, hips and bums enlargement. I and my wife are very happy for the help rendered to me by DR. UBALO, and i want to say a big thanks to Doctor for the help. You can contact the Doctor now on his Email: drubalospellcaster@gmail.com Am thankful to the doctor for helping me. you can call him whatsapp +2347059186346..

  105. I'm 21 just got my surgery done a few hours ago, got rid of my tonsils and part of my uvula. I fought with my doctor begging to have the whole thing removed. He refused and currently I can't sleep because every time I try I'm choking on it. It's swollen up like a balloon that fits perfectly in my throat. Swallowing is a nightmare, the meds help but only for short bursts of time. I found that sherbet works better than water, but only if I let it melt on my tongue, and I've already gone through half a gallon of it trying to keep the pain down. The pain is excruciating, everyone keeps asking me questions while I can barely breathe let alone speak. It's currently midnight. 9 hours since I've had my surgery and I am regretting it completely.

  106. I am in my fifths day of toncilectomy. Today morning when I woke up and I felt my ears are gone , it was unbelievable pain in my ears, immediately I rub ice cube on ears and neck slowly the pain is gone. At this period eating something is not big problem but the problem is ear pain after any duration of sleep. I am keeping ice bag beside me always and it is helping me. Throat pain is not only disturbing, teeth pain is significant too. I took chicken and fish yesterday, it felts very very delicious after 4th day night of toncilectomy.1-4 day I was on water, juice, ice cream and yogurt, now I shifting to normal diet gradually.
Empty stomach will make your pain significant, so throwing foods now and then in stomach is good idea though it will be little bit painful. My doctor set a 10 days drug plan including antibiotic and mouthwash, there is no paracetamol. I think paracetamol cant address your ear and teeth pain. I am sleeping 8-12 hours in a day and it helps relief of my crushing pain.
Music, yeah with headset will remove your pain dramatically, try it. You can try also action movie and also computer games.
I am from Rangpur, Bangladesh and now I am
    22.
My advice is get your toncilectomy before 16.
If you are 20+ then prepare yourself.
Though it is like almost similar to committing suicide but it definitely take you through a life lesson which will make your life better.
    Thank you for reading this.

  120. It is only my first day after surgery. I am a 22 year old male. The throat pain was almost non existent yesterday but has grown to be a lot worse today, nothing to cry about. My tongue still is numb, I'm assuming from the clamps they use to hold it during surgery. I've been drinking water all the time sip by sip and I slept with a humidifier. It really seemed to help.

My biggest problem as of today is sleep. I was waking up almost every 20 minutes because I couldn't breathe. It sounds scary but really what is happening is everything is so swollen that I can only breathe IN through my nose and not OUT, and obviously I don't want to breathe with my mouth. I didn't notice this until night time and I can breathe out if I'm just relaxing but it always seems to get blocked up as I'm sleeping.

I know I have MUCH more to come.. but we're all strong enough to push through this recovery. If you're getting a tonsillectomy do not worry or have anxiety about the surgery. I was shaking in the bed before as they were giving me an IV and I didn't even think I was nervous... But I woke up as soon as they put the anesthesia in me. Lol. I actually felt really good the day of. I know pre-op can be nerve wrecking but just stay calm and breathe. Hope to document more about my experience as it's only day 2.

  124. Are you sick? Have you been battling with strange and funny illnesses? Are you in a situation whereby the doctors have done necessary tests and said there isn’t anything wrong with you? ... These were all my stories until I met with a total cure for them all... His name is Dr. Ose says my mom... I was almost at the point of death. It was that serious that I was just placed on life support even as the doctors didn't know what was wrong with me. My mom just came to my hospital bed one morning and said she had found a solution to all of my sufferings (because that was what I referred to the situation I was in then)... She said she was going through the internet and she came across some testimonies of how some people who had similar cases as mine were all cured off their illnesses through the power of this voodoo man. Without hesitation, I told her to contact the man, Which she did and she went on with the procedures as instructed her by this voodoo man (these procedures, I wasn't aware of because I was in a really bad shape then, And whenever I asked my mom she would say I shouldn't bother myself about that...that it was something she could handle). Not to bore you readers with too much of my story, in seven days from that day my mom told me about the voodoo man, I was cured off this killer disease that was at the verge of taking my life. Want to share your testimony like me? Contact the voodoo man on his direct email address. droseherbalcenter@gmail.com (his mobile or whataspp number is +393512872745... 129. After reading all of the horrible experiences that most have unfortunately had, I felt like I should give my positive experience for those terrified of having this done. I’m a 46 y/o female and was recommended to have my tonsillectomy due to recurrent tonsillitis (7 documented cases in 7 months and two tonsil abscessss). For me, this hasn’t been as bad as some of the pain I had associated with the abscesses. I’m on day 8 and taking it slowly. Drinking the fluids as much as possible. My throat pain is around a 6 and ear pain a 3. Some days I have tolerated it with alternating Tylenol and Advil and some days have had to use the hydrocodone. Each day it improves, So hang in there, if you have to do this...there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck!
